Jade Plant Care

The Jade plant is an easy to care for succulent houseplant. Its scientific name is Crassula argentea. You may have also heard it called the “friendship tree” or “lucky plant”. The information provided here will help you keep your Jade healthy.

Watering:

An important topic for the Jade plant! Your Jade must not be over-watered; this can cause the stem and roots to rot and the leaves to fall off. Let the soil dry out completely between waterings. In the summer, you may want to water your Jade every 10-20 days. In the winter you may find your jade needs to be watered even less, perhaps only about once per month. A good way to check if your jade needs water is to insert your finger into the soil – if you don’t feel any moisture then it needs some water.

Sunlight:

Jades can tolerate a range of light levels from full sun to light shade, however they should not be kept in direct sunlight for too much of the day as this can result in scorched leaves and cause the plant to rot. Moderate light with no more than 3-5 hours of bright sunlight per day is best for your Jade plant. If the plant begins to look a bit leggy or spindly, it is not getting enough light.

Temperature:

Jades don’t do well in extreme temperatures; overexposure to both high and low temperatures will affect your plant’s health. Jades will do best when they are kept above 50 degrees F in the winter and at 80 degrees F or below in the summer.

Pests:

We’re hoping that your Jade plant doesn’t acquire any unwelcome visitors, but there are some pests that you should watch out for. Aphids and mealybugs are the most common offenders when it comes to Jades. Clusters of mealybugs tend to look like small cotton balls and are usually found in areas where the leaves and stems branch. One way to remove them is to dip a cotton swab in alcohol and wipe them away, repeating this process until they are no longer visible. Aphids appear as small specks on the plant and can be white, black, or brown. They can also be removed physically by washing the affected area of the plant.
