How to Build a Queen Size Platform Bed with Storage Underneath
Building a queen size platform bed with storage underneath is a great way to add extra storage to your bedroom without taking up too much space. It's also a relatively easy project that can be completed in a weekend with the right tools and materials.
Tools and Materials
- Circular saw
- Drill
- Screwdriver
- Measuring tape
- Level
- (4) 4x4 posts (cut to 56 inches long)
- (4) 2x6 boards (cut to 80 inches long)
- (1) sheet of 3/4-inch plywood (cut to 60x80 inches)
- (1) box of 2-inch wood screws
- (1) box of 1-inch wood screws
- Wood glue
- Sandpaper
- Finish of your choice (paint, stain, or polyurethane)
Instructions
- Start by assembling the frame of the bed. Cut the 4x4 posts to 56 inches long and the 2x6 boards to 80 inches long. Assemble the frame by attaching the 2x6 boards to the 4x4 posts using 2-inch wood screws. Make sure to use wood glue for extra strength.
- Once the frame is assembled, attach the plywood to the top of the frame using 1-inch wood screws. Make sure to countersink the screws so that they are flush with the surface of the plywood.
- Next, build the drawers for the storage underneath the bed. Cut (4) pieces of 1/2-inch plywood to 24x36 inches for the drawer sides and (2) pieces of 1/2-inch plywood to 24x60 inches for the drawer bottoms. Assemble the drawers by attaching the sides to the bottoms using 1-inch wood screws. Make sure to use wood glue for extra strength.
- Once the drawers are assembled, attach drawer slides to the inside of the frame and the bottom of the drawers.
- Finally, sand the bed and finish it with the finish of your choice. Paint, stain, or polyurethane will all work well.
Tips
- If you want to add extra support to the bed, you can add a center support leg. Cut a 4x4 post to 56 inches long and attach it to the center of the frame using 2-inch wood screws.
- You can also add headboard and/or footboard to the bed if you want. Just be sure to measure the height of your mattress and box spring before you start building so that you can make sure the headboard and footboard are the right height.
- If you're using a heavy mattress, you may want to reinforce the frame by adding additional 2x4 or 2x6 supports.
