How to Construct a Double Murphy Bed
Murphy beds, also known as wall beds, are a space-saving solution for small spaces or rooms that need to serve multiple purposes. Double Murphy beds are a great option for guest rooms, home offices, or studio apartments. Building a double Murphy bed is a project that can be completed in a weekend with the right tools and materials.
Materials You'll Need:
- Two twin bed frames
- 2x6 lumber (6 pieces, 8 feet long)
- 2x4 lumber (2 pieces, 8 feet long)
- 3/4 inch plywood (1 piece, 4 feet x 8 feet)
- Wood screws
- Heavy-duty hinges (2 pairs)
- Gas struts (2)
- Handle or pull knobs
- Primer and paint (optional)
Tools You'll Need:
- Circular saw or miter saw
- Drill
- Screwdriver
- Measuring tape
- Level
- Clamps
Instructions:
1. Assemble the bed frames:
Assemble two twin bed frames according to the manufacturer's instructions. These frames will form the base and headboard of your Murphy bed.
2. Build the support structure:
Cut two 2x6s to a length of 8 feet. These will be the vertical supports for your Murphy bed. Cut two 2x4s to a length of 8 feet. These will be the horizontal supports.
Attach the 2x4s to the 2x6s using wood screws, creating a rectangular frame. The 2x4s should be spaced evenly apart.
3. Attach the bed frames:
Place the base of one bed frame on top of the support structure, centered and flush with the back edge. Secure it with wood screws.
Place the headboard of the other bed frame on top of the support structure, centered and flush with the front edge. Secure it with wood screws.
4. Install the hinges:
Attach one pair of heavy-duty hinges to the top of the headboard and the other pair to the bottom of the headboard. Make sure the hinges are aligned and that the bed folds and unfolds smoothly.
5. Install the gas struts:
Attach one gas strut to each side of the Murphy bed, between the base and the headboard. The gas struts will help to lift and lower the bed.
6. Attach the handle or pull knobs:
Attach a handle or pull knobs to the front of the headboard for easy opening and closing.
7. Prime and paint (optional):
If desired, prime and paint the Murphy bed to match your room décor.
Congratulations! You have now successfully built a double Murphy bed. Enjoy the extra space and functionality it provides.
