How to Extend a Full Bed Frame to Queen Size

Converting a full bed frame to a queen size can be a budget-friendly and practical solution when upgrading your bed. This project typically involves extending the headboard, footboard, and side rails to accommodate the additional width of a queen mattress. While it may seem daunting, with the right tools and approach, you can successfully transform your full bed frame into a queen-sized haven.

Understanding the Dimensions

Before starting any modifications, carefully measure the existing full bed frame and compare it to the standard dimensions of a queen bed. A queen mattress is typically 60 inches wide and 80 inches long, while a full mattress is 54 inches wide and 75 inches long. The primary modification will be extending the width by six inches on each side, while the length may not require adjustments.

Essential Tools and Materials

To successfully extend your bed frame, you will need the following tools and materials:

  • Measuring tape
  • Wood saw (miter saw or circular saw)
  • Drill with appropriate drill bits
  • Wood glue
  • Wood screws (appropriate length and size)
  • Wood filler (optional)
  • Sandpaper (various grits)
  • Paint or stain (optional)
  • Wood (lumber matching the existing frame)

Modifying the Headboard and Footboard

Start by carefully removing the headboard and footboard from the frame. Measure the width of the existing headboard/footboard and add six inches on each side (total of 12 inches). Cut two pieces of lumber to these dimensions. These pieces will be extensions for the headboard/footboard. Attach these extensions to the existing headboard/footboard using wood glue and screws. Ensure the extensions are flush with the existing side edges. Repeat this process for the footboard.

Extending the Side Rails

The side rails require similar extensions. Measure the length of the side rails. Now, cut two new pieces of lumber for each side rail, each six inches longer than the original rails. Attach these extensions to the existing side rails using wood glue and screws. Ensure the new wood is flush with the existing side rails. If necessary, adjust the position of the side rails to ensure they fit the extended headboard and footboard.

Finishing Touches

Once all extensions are securely attached, use wood filler to fill any gaps or holes. Sand the entire frame with sandpaper, starting with a coarser grit and finishing with a finer grit. If desired, paint or stain the frame to match the existing finish.

Remember to adjust the dimensions of the extensions based on the specific measurements of your bed frame. Always ensure that the extensions are properly attached, and allow the wood glue to dry completely before placing the mattress on the extended frame.
