How to Make a Bedspread with Split Corners

A bedspread, also known as a bed cover or throw, is a textile item used to cover the bed and enhance the aesthetic appeal of the bedroom. It can be made from various materials, including cotton, linen, silk, or synthetic fabrics. A bedspread with split corners, also known as a "mitered corner" bedspread, is a popular style that provides a neat and tailored look. This article will guide you through the process of creating a bedspread with split corners using a sewing machine.

Step 1: Gathering Materials and Tools

Before embarking on creating your bedspread with split corners, ensure you have the following materials and tools readily available:

  • Fabric: Select a suitable fabric for your bedspread. Consider the desired color, pattern, and texture.
  • Sewing machine: A sewing machine is essential for stitching the bedspread together.
  • Sewing thread: Choose thread that matches the color of your fabric.
  • Scissors: Sharp scissors are necessary for cutting the fabric accurately.
  • Pins: Pins are used to hold the fabric pieces together before sewing.
  • Sewing ruler: A sewing ruler will help you measure the fabric accurately.
  • Measuring tape: A measuring tape is essential for taking accurate measurements of your bed.
  • Iron and ironing board: Iron the fabric before and after sewing to ensure a smooth finish.
  • Safety pins: Safety pins are useful for temporarily securing the bedspread to the bed while making the split corners.

Step 2: Measuring and Cutting the Fabric

Accurate measurements are crucial for creating a well-fitting bedspread. Start by measuring the length and width of your bed, including the overhang you desire for the bedspread. Add a seam allowance of 1 to 1.5 inches to each measurement.

Once you have the measurements, you can cut the fabric. Using a straight edge and sharp scissors, cut two rectangular pieces of fabric according to the dimensions you calculated. The two pieces will form the main body of the bedspread.

Step 3: Creating the Split Corners

The split corners are the defining feature of this bedspread style. To create them, you will need to cut two triangles from fabric. The base of the triangle should be equal to the desired depth of the split corner. The height of the triangle will determine the angle of the split corner.

To calculate the height:

  • Measure the depth of the split corner you want.
  • Divide the depth by 2.
  • This result is the height of the triangle.

For example, if you want a split corner depth of 10 inches, you would cut a triangle with a base of 10 inches and a height of 5 inches.

Cut two triangles for each corner of the bedspread. These triangles will be attached to the corners of the fabric pieces that comprise the main body of the bedspread.

Step 4: Sewing the Split Corners

Once the split corners are cut, pin them to the corners of the fabric pieces. Align one side of the triangle with the edge of the fabric, and the other side should be folded over and secured with pins.

Using a sewing machine, stitch along the edge of the triangle where it meets the fabric piece. Secure the stitching by backstitching at the beginning and end. Repeat this process for all four corners of the bedspread.

Step 5: Finishing Touches

Once the split corners are sewn, the bedspread will need to be finished. You can choose to use a hem or a serger to finish the edges. If using a hem, fold the edges of the fabric over twice, and stitch along the edge. If using a serger, run the fabric through the serger machine to create a neat and secure edge.

After finishing the edges, iron the bedspread to remove any wrinkles and give it a crisp appearance.
