How to Make a Queen-size Loft Bed
A queen-size loft bed is a great way to save space in a small bedroom or add extra storage space. Building your loft bed is a relatively simple project that can be completed in a weekend with the right tools and materials.
Materials You'll Need
- 2x4 lumber (for the frame and legs)
- Plywood (for the platform)
- Mattress
- Box spring (optional)
- Wood screws
- Drill
- Circular saw
- Measuring tape
- Level
- Safety glasses
Instructions
- Measure and cut the lumber. The frame of the loft bed will be made from 2x4 lumber. You will need to cut the following pieces:
- 4 pieces of 2x4 that are 8 feet long (for the legs)
- 2 pieces of 2x4 that are 6 feet long (for the long sides of the frame)
- 2 pieces of 2x4 that are 4 feet long (for the short sides of the frame)
- Assemble the frame. Use wood screws to attach the legs to the long sides of the frame. Then, attach the short sides of the frame to the legs.
- Cut the plywood. The plywood will form the platform of the loft bed. You will need to cut the plywood to the following size: 60 inches wide by 80 inches long.
- Attach the plywood to the frame. Use wood screws to attach the plywood to the frame. Make sure that the plywood is flush with the edges of the frame.
- Add the mattress and box spring. The final step is to add the mattress and box spring to the loft bed. If you are using a box spring, place it on the plywood platform first. Then, place the mattress on top of the box spring.
Tips
- If you are not comfortable using power tools, you can have the lumber cut to size at a home improvement store.
- Be sure to use safety glasses when operating power tools.
- Make sure that the loft bed is level before you add the mattress and box spring.
