How To Build A Twin Trundle Bed

A twin trundle bed is a great space-saving solution for small bedrooms or guest rooms. It consists of two beds: a twin bed that sits on top and a trundle bed that can be pulled out from underneath. This design allows you to have two beds in the same space, making it a perfect option for sleepovers or accommodating guests.

Building a twin trundle bed is a relatively easy project that can be completed in a few hours. All you need are some basic woodworking skills and tools. Here are the steps on how to build a twin trundle bed:

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

You will need the following materials to build a twin trundle bed:

  • 2x4 lumber (12 pieces, 8 feet long)
  • 2x6 lumber (1 piece, 8 feet long)
  • 1/2-inch plywood (2 sheets, 4 feet by 8 feet)
  • 1-inch plywood (1 sheet, 4 feet by 8 feet)
  • Wood screws (2 inches and 3 inches)
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper
  • Paint or stain (optional)

Step 2: Cut the Wood

Cut the wood according to the following dimensions:

  • 2x4 lumber:
  • 6 pieces - 8 feet long
  • 6 pieces - 36 inches long
  • 2x6 lumber:
  • 1 piece - 8 feet long
  • 1/2-inch plywood:
  • 2 pieces - 36 inches by 80 inches
  • 1 piece - 36 inches by 48 inches
  • 1-inch plywood:
  • 2 pieces - 36 inches by 80 inches

Step 3: Assemble the Bed Frame

Start by assembling the bed frame. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Attach two 2x4s (8 feet long) to the headboard and two 2x4s (8 feet long) to the footboard using 2-inch wood screws.
  2. Attach the 2x6 (8 feet long) to the center of the bed frame using 2-inch wood screws.
  3. Attach the remaining 2x4s (36 inches long) to the side rails of the bed frame using 2-inch wood screws.

Step 4: Attach the Plywood

Once the bed frame is assembled, you can attach the plywood. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Attach the 1/2-inch plywood to the bottom of the bed frame using 1-inch wood screws.
  2. Attach the 1-inch plywood to the top of the bed frame using 1-inch wood screws.

Step 5: Attach the Trundle Bed

To attach the trundle bed, follow these steps:

  1. Cut two 2x4s (36 inches long) and two 2x4s (48 inches long).
  2. Attach the 2x4s (36 inches long) to the headboard and footboard of the trundle bed using 2-inch wood screws.
  3. Attach the 2x4s (48 inches long) to the side rails of the trundle bed using 2-inch wood screws.
  4. Attach the 1/2-inch plywood to the bottom of the trundle bed using 1-inch wood screws.

Step 6: Add the Finishing Touches

Once the bed is assembled, you can add the finishing touches. This may include sanding the bed to smooth out any rough edges, painting or staining the bed, and adding a mattress and bedding.

That's it! You've now built a twin trundle bed that you can use in your own home.
